White Jigsaw is a very minimalistic puzzle -- Time Waster

I used to think the whole point of putting together a jigsaw puzzle was the satisfaction of seeing the image at the end. You know, they always sell those huge puzzles that take up half a wall once you're done making them - it's like creating a poster, one step at a time.

White Jigsaw proves that it's not all about the picture. It's as bare-bones as can be: just a bunch of puzzle pieces, and a frame they all have to fit into. No sound effects, no images, nothing but the zen-like essence of the jigsaw.

The game starts you off with a basic 4x3 puzzle, and gradually increases in complexity as you progress (the next level is 5x3). The pieces snap into position as you drag them, and they all seem to be aligned correctly, so no rotation is needed. This really helps - I think if they could be rotated it would get a lot more confusing, especially since they're blank so you can't match pieces of the image to figure out the orientation.

While the game doesn't save your progress on a single level, it does let you carry on from the last level you reached before you stopped playing. All in all, it's a great way to rekindle your love for jigsaw puzzles.

Security firm Lookout warns against 'Geinimi' trojan hitting Android in China

Mobile security firm Lookout today sounded the alarm on a new Trojan that apparently is affecting Android devices in China. It's called "Geinimi" and is piggybacking known legitimate apps, including Monkey Jump 2, Sex Positions, President vs. Aliens, City Defense and Baseball Superstars 2010.

What havoc can it wreak? Says Lookout:

The specific information it collects includes location coordinates and unique identifiers for the device (IMEI) and SIM card (IMSI). At five-minute intervals, Geinimi attempts to connect to a remote server using one of ten embedded domain names. A subset of the domain names includes www.widifu.com, www.udaore.com, www.frijd.com, www.islpast.com and www.piajesj.com. If it connects, Geinimi transmits collected device information to the remote server.

You're probably going to have to go way, way out of your way for this to be a problem, though. REPEAT: We're not overly worried about this. You have to download and sideload an infected app through Chinese app stores. So unless you're doing that, you should be cool. 

That said, Lookout notes that Geinimi "did substantially increase the level of effort required to analyze the malware" and that it's updated its app to protect against the threat. So if you're running it, you're cool. [Lookout]

Drop.io and Present.io officially shut down

At the end of October, Facebook acquired Drop.io and set about integrating the media sharing service into Facebook.com. At that time, they spelled out December 15th as the final shutdown date -- and while it's taken a few extra days, Drop.io has finally flatlined. Unsurprisingly, the company's less-talked-about Present.io screen sharing service has also been shuttered.

Both sites now display a no-nonsense "discontinued" message that lets you know you can still email support@drop.io with your inquiries. As for what Facebook plans on doing with Drop.io's assets -- we're just going to have to wait patiently. Perhaps we'll see some sort of Present.io-based video chat feature?

Firefox 4 beta 3 for Android hands on: Mozilla browser hits the Market

Mozilla has released a new beta of Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo to keep the mobile browser in step with its desktop cousin, and it packs a number of important improvements. Perhaps the most noticeable one on Android is that you can now find Firefox in the Market, meaning future updates will be a smoother process -- just make sure you uninstall any previous beta versions before downloading from the Market.

So what's new in Firefox 4 beta 3?

• Improved support for both software and hardware keyboards
• Android-style menus
• Better integration with other apps when opening a link
• A save page-as-PDF option
• Improved Firefox Sync with new 'add a device' feature
• Full screen video and improved audio support
• Copy and paste support in the URL bar
• Developer access to a localStorage API and orientation events

After browsing for a while with beta 3, I'm definitely left feeling it's faster than the previous non-Market release. Some pages, however, still load about 30-40% slower than they do in Dolphin Mini (my current browser of choice). The new features are definitely key additions -- especially basics like keyboard support and copy/paste in the URL bar. Firefox Sync setup is an absolute breeze now, thanks to the 'add a device' option in both the desktop and mobile versions.

Firefox 4 is also a bit of a space hog, currently consuming about 21MB -- ten times more than Dolphin Mini. And while I dig the desktop-to-mobile Firefox 4 synchronicity, I'm not sure it's enough to make me switch just yet. If I start doing more mobile surfing (which would make Sync more useful to me) and Mozilla kicks up the speed and trims a little fat, Firefox 4 will definitely be a strong contender for the coveted default browser crown.

iPad magazine sales numbers show steep decline over a few short months

Uh oh. Since its debut, the iPad has been variously hailed as the final nail in the coffin of all physical media and the savior of the magazine and newspaper industries. A few magazines, such as Wired, had truly impressive digital launches, with over 100,000 downloads of its first issue in June. It doesn't seem, however, that the stellar start was in any way sustainable. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, which collects magazine circulation data from companies willing to furnish numbers, all iPad magazines have seen fall offs in downloads over the past few months. Wired was averaging 31,000 downloads from July through September, had 22,000 and 23,000 respectively in October and November. Other magazines have seen similar declines: Vanity Fair sold 8,700 downloads of its November issue, down from an average of about 10,500 from August through October; GQ sold 11,000 copies, its worst showing yet. Now, not all magazines release their numbers, of course -- including The New Yorker, People, and Esquire -- but the numbers we do have seem to be indicating a trend of general decline after a short burst of excitement.
